What are champagne diamonds?

Introduction.

Diamonds come in different types to suite people interest and desire. Champagne diamonds are one of the common and precious type of diamonds. They are naturally colored diamonds produced in a wide range of colors. Their color is created by the many mineral contaminants found in clear diamonds. These minerals combine in such away to create a sparkling brown hue. Their colors range from light straw to rich cognac.

History.

Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia is the world's largest source of champagne diamonds. East Kimberley, where the mine is found, is a land of mountain ranges and arid savannah where lamproite pipes and diamond ores lie.

Australian Aborigines, the traditional owners of the land in the East Kimberley, believe that the escape of a barramundi fish from spinifex net led to the formation of the diamonds. According to the myth, the colors of the diamonds mined from the region come from the different parts of the barramundi fish colors.

The communities in the region work together to provide a healthier living and ensure that the rights of the original owners of the mines are observed.

Types of champagne diamonds.

The champagne diamonds are also commonly referred to as brown diamonds. They can be identified in two different types; chocolate diamonds and cognac. All brown diamonds can be classified as champagne diamonds as long as they have the brown shades on them.

Identification of champagne diamonds.

One can easily identify champagne diamonds by looking on their color. Champagne diamonds range from light color to dark brown color. They may contain traces of pink making them cinnamon diamond or green on them making them clove diamond. They will always sparkle under the light and have a clear hue of brown on them. True champagne diamonds are not opaque, but they do reflect light. One should be able to determine whether the colors are induced or natural since they can be treated to bring out pink colors.

Grading of champagne diamonds.

Champagne diamonds can be graded differently according to the features they possess. These features enable easy comparison and evaluation of these diamonds. The features are commonly referred to as the 4Cs. Each "c" stands for a feature:

(1). Color refer to the intensity of color that a diamond possesses. It also refers to the lack of color as seen on some diamonds.

(2). Clarity refers to the state of a diamond`s freedom from blemishes and inclusions like dark spots and cracks.

(3). Cut -refers to the symmetry and proportions on the diamond`s face. This is fashioned during the transformation of a rough diamond to a polished one.

(4). Carat -this stands for the standard unit of weight for diamonds. One carat is the same as 0.2 gram and one carat is equal to 100 points.

When choosing a champagne diamond, one should consider the 4Cs to choose a quality and genuine diamond.

Using of champagne diamonds.

The colors of champagne diamonds are warm and suit all skin tones. They can be mixed perfectly with other types of diamonds to create an appealing effect. They can be used to make men`s rings and cuff links.
